The Science of Spaced Repetition: Why Cramming Doesn't Work
Cramming the night before an exam feels productive. The science says otherwise. Here's how spaced repetition — backed by 130 years of memory research — actually works.
Every student has pulled an all-nighter before a test and felt confident walking in the next morning. But a week later, can you recall what you studied? For most people, the answer is barely anything. This isn't a memory problem — it's a study technique problem.
The Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve
In 1885, German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus spent years memorising nonsense syllables and testing his own recall over time. His finding — now called the Forgetting Curve — showed that humans forget roughly 50% of new information within an hour, 70% within a day, and up to 90% within a week if the material is never revisited.
The curve is steep and ruthless. Cramming exploits only a tiny portion of our memory capacity because the information is reviewed exactly once, right before it needs to be used. The brain interprets single-use information as unimportant and gradually discards it.
What Spaced Repetition Does Differently
Spaced repetition works by reviewing material at increasing intervals — just before you're about to forget it. Each time you successfully recall a piece of information, the interval before the next review gets longer. This mirrors how long-term memory consolidation actually works in the brain.
- First review: 1 day after initial learning
- Second review: 3 days later
- Third review: 7 days later
- Fourth review: 14 days later
- Fifth review: 30 days later
After 5 spaced reviews, research suggests retention climbs above 90% — compared to around 10–20% for the same total study time spent cramming. The math is unambiguous.
Why Most Students Don't Use It
Spaced repetition feels less productive in the moment. When you review material a week after learning it, you'll have forgotten some of it — and that forgetting feels like failure. In reality, it's the mechanism. The act of struggling to retrieve something and then successfully recalling it is called the 'desirable difficulty' effect, and it dramatically strengthens the memory trace.
If reviewing material feels too easy, you've left it too long between reviews and the curve has already flattened. If it feels impossibly hard, you've reviewed too soon. Aim for the point where recall requires some effort but is still achievable.
How to Apply This as an IB or CBSE Student
For IB Students
IB exams cover two years of content. Cramming is literally impossible at this scale — there's too much material. A spaced repetition system started in Year 1 means by the time May exams arrive, you've reviewed every key concept 4–5 times and recall is automatic.
- After each class, spend 10 minutes writing down everything you remember from the lesson without looking at notes
- Review those notes 3 days later, then again at 1 week
- For vocabulary-heavy subjects (languages, psychology terms), convert your notes into flashcards and review them on the SRS schedule above
For CBSE Students
CBSE exams are closer together and more volume-based than IB, but spaced repetition still applies. A practical approach: after finishing each chapter, schedule a 30-minute review for one week later in your calendar. Don't skip it. Treat it like a class.
The Practical Minimum
You don't need a sophisticated system to benefit from spaced repetition. The minimum viable approach: after every study session, write a list of the 5 things you most want to remember. Review that list tomorrow. Review it again in 3 days. That simple habit, applied consistently, will outperform a cramming session the night before every single time.
