5 Note-Taking Methods Compared: Which One Is Right for You?
There's no single 'best' way to take notes. The right method depends on the subject, the type of content, and how your brain processes information. Here's a clear comparison.
Your notes are the bridge between a lecture or textbook and the exam. Most students take the same notes the same way for every subject — and that's where things go wrong. Different subjects, different learning goals, and different content types call for different approaches. Here are five proven methods and when to use each one.
1. The Cornell Method
Developed at Cornell University in the 1950s, this method divides each page into three sections: a narrow left column (Cue column), a wide right column (Note-taking column), and a summary box at the bottom.
- During class/reading: write detailed notes in the right column
- After: write questions or keywords in the left column that test the right column content
- At the bottom: write a 2–3 sentence summary of the entire page

3. The Outline Method
The outline method uses a hierarchical structure with main topics, sub-topics, and supporting details indented underneath each other. It's the most common format students use — and it's excellent when content has a clear structure.

It struggles with content that doesn't follow a linear structure — you can't easily show that two ideas from different branches connect to each other.

The goal is to process information in real time, not to create a complete record. Flow notes are ideal for lectures where the speaker moves fast and you can't write everything.

5. The Charting Method
The charting method uses a pre-built table where each column represents a category and each row represents a topic or item being compared. It's exceptionally efficient for comparative content.
For example, when studying different types of market structures in Economics: columns might be 'Number of firms', 'Product type', 'Price control', 'Examples'. Each row is one structure (Monopoly, Oligopoly, Perfect Competition). Every cell is a short answer.
Best for: CBSE Biology (comparing mitosis vs meiosis, aerobic vs anaerobic), IB Economics (market structures), IB Chemistry (comparing reactions), any content involving multiple items with common attributes.
Which Method Should You Use?
The answer is: more than one. Skilled students mix methods based on what they're studying. A Biology lecture might produce flow notes in class, which you then convert into a Cornell-format revision sheet, and finally summarise as a mind map before the exam. The act of converting your notes from one format to another is itself a powerful form of active recall.
